Regulation & Security
On safety and financial strength, Interactive Brokers is in the top tier of the entire industry, and the reason is structural rather than just a list of licences. Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. is publicly listed on Nasdaq under the ticker IBKR, which means it must publish audited financials, disclose its capital position and answer to public shareholders and market regulators. The group is exceptionally well capitalised — consistently reporting equity capital far in excess of regulatory requirements — which for a broker holding client assets is one of the strongest possible trust signals.
The regulatory footprint is genuinely global and runs through separate, locally licensed entities. In the United States, Interactive Brokers LLC is registered with the SEC and CFTC, is a member of FINRA and the major US exchanges, and provides SIPC protection (up to $500,000, including $250,000 for cash). Elsewhere the group operates through Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited (FCA, register #208159), Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited (Central Bank of Ireland) for European clients, Interactive Brokers Central Europe Zrt. (Magyar Nemzeti Bank), Interactive Brokers Canada Inc. (CIRO / CIPF), plus locally regulated entities overseen by ASIC (Australia), the SFC (Hong Kong) and MAS (Singapore), among others. As with every multi-entity broker, the entity that onboards you — and therefore the protections and leverage you receive — is set by your country of residence.
The day-to-day protections are firmly in place: segregated client funds held separately from company money, statutory investor-compensation coverage under the UK and EU entities (the FSCS and the Irish Investor Compensation Scheme respectively), and continuous, automated risk monitoring that is a genuine hallmark of the firm. Founded in 1978 and headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut, with more than four decades of history and a public listing behind it, Interactive Brokers has one of the longest and cleanest operating records of any broker you can open an account with.
